Pierres Directes: an exhibit by Michael Moskaliuk and Hannah FoxSep 1, 6:00pmListen HearMichael moskaliuk "pierres directes"
The relationship between the artist and their medium is undoubtedly important in regards to how the final product is realized and how it can communicate. In respect to stone carving, I believe that this tie could not be more evident. Selecting scavenged pieces of limestone and concrete, I began to shape the blocks using steel chisels and hammers. I chose to use as little reference material as possible, mainly sketching rough ideas onto paper. I let the stone's peculiar attributes influence my hand and, ultimately, my ideas. Thus, I began to carve "directly," which is to say that the stone was revealing in every aspect of production. In reference to Joseph Bernard's sculptures sharing the same name, "Pierres Directes" is a collection of pieces that were directly carved in between March 2016 & June 2017.
Hannah fox "Internal structures"
At the core of humanity is the driving force to create and change our environments to better suit our needs. But in this century, the need for making in the developed world is becoming obsolete. We, as privileged Americans, no longer need to make utilitarian objects using these processes to stay warm or even to survive. Everything we need is mass produced in factories we will never visit, by machines most of us could not even begin to operate or comprehend. Creating mindful and meditative objects is how I cope with these, and other realities facing our status as a modern society. By using the ancient feminine processes of crochet and weaving I am able to calm my overactive mind and make sense of the world around me. Most recently, however, I have been trying to let go of the repetitiveness of the textile processes, of the slow and deliberate motions, and give way to more expressive pieces. In these pieces the textile materials can stand on their own without the presence of a stitch or even a knot. The work shown here is a combination of the repetitive, meditation inducing pieces, and the gestural, free standing sculptures.... See MoreSee Less
